Stanley A. Parr, 96, hardware store owner

February 18, 2003

Stanley A. Parr, a retired hardware store owner, died Saturday of a blood disorder at Oak Crest Village in Parkville. The former Idlewylde resident was 96.

Born in Baltimore and raised on Caroline Street, Mr. Parr attended St. Paul's Parochial School and later Polytechnic Institute, from which he graduated in 1924.

After working on a horse-drawn American Ice Co. wagon as a young man, he got his retailing start at Wagner's Hardware on Harford Avenue. In 1945, he opened Parr & Steadman Hardware with his brother-in-law, Bill Steadman, on West Baltimore Street. He later owned York Hardware at Belvedere Avenue and York Road, and Moravia Hardware on Bowleys Lane.

After retiring from ownership about 20 years ago and serving as president of the Baltimore Retail Hardware Association, Mr. Parr worked as a salesman at Priceless Hardware in Jarrettsville into his 80s.

He enjoyed playing his banjo at family get-togethers and was a longtime member of the Notre Dame Council 2901 of the Knights of Columbus in Homeland, where he performed with the Singing Knights. He also enjoyed dancing.

Mr. Parr enjoyed drawing - pastels and pencil sketches - and in the 1980s took classes in stained glass at Essex Community College. He designed and completed panels, lampshades and sun catchers, and in 2001 had an exhibit of his art and stained glass at Oak Crest. He completed his last pastel drawing, an outdoor scene suggested by the view from his patio door, in October.

His wife of 69 years, the former Bertha Schmirmund, died in 2001.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at noon Friday in the chapel at Oak Crest Village, 8800 Walther Blvd.

Survivors include two daughters, Dolores Schramm of Whitehall and Phyllis Kelley of Stevensville; a sister, Dolores Fisher of Perry Hall; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
