Inmate disappears in Baltimore County

February 17, 2003|BY A SUN STAFF WRITER

Amid a snowfall heavy enough to quickly bury footprints, an inmate awaiting trial on robbery and kidnapping charges disappeared yesterday from a work detail at the Baltimore County Detention Center in Towson, county police said in an appeal for help in finding the man.

Missing was Jose Pava Castillo, 23, who was wearing a white prison uniform with the letters BCDC on the back when he vanished in the snow from the jail on Kenilworth Drive.

Castillo, who had no fixed address, was arrested a month ago and charged in the abduction of a 20-year-old woman in her car outside a convenience store on Washington Boulevard. The woman was forced to withdraw money from her account at several automated teller machines.

Police said Castillo was in a small group of inmates helping to load a truck when he disappeared about 4 p.m. "When the job was over, and officials did a head count, they realized he was not there," police said. "He may have been gone about 45 minutes before the authorities noticed that he was missing."
