COLUMBIA - An unknown gunman shot at a car yesterday morning after trying to assault one of its passengers at the Stevens Forest Apartment Complex in the Oakland Mills Village of Columbia, Howard County police said yesterday.

Police say the car was parked in the 9600 block of Basket Ring Road at about 12:30 a.m. when a man tried to reach into the car to assault the passenger in the front seat. When the passenger yelled that the assailant had a gun, the driver drove the car from the scene. The gunman fired at the fleeing car, striking its trunk, police say.
