Church supports Bestgate Village plan

I am the pastor of Fowler United Methodist Church, which is one of the oldest churches on Bestgate Road and has served the community over 125 years.

Our property is adjacent to the proposed Village at Bestgate, therefore we would be most directly affected by this project. We have discussed the pros and cons of the Village, and the alternative and decided to support the village for several reasons.

First, we will get a quality development similar to what was done at the Village at Waugh Chapel. Of course, the Bestgate Village will be on a smaller scale.

Second, this development will forever preserve 24 acres of natural greenery in the rear. I value the thought of 24 acres in Annapolis left in its natural state.

This development would bring 500 additional jobs into our community. We have given great thought concerning tax dollars that would filter into the community and county because of the mixed use zoning. The village would bring local services into our community and reduce the number of trips we have to make.

The Bestgate Community is made up of a diverse population of condominiums, town homes and single family homes and we need a gathering place. The proposed 5,000 SF community center would become the heart of our community. We could have special programs for children, teen-agers and seniors citizens in a community meeting place where we can gather together.

Furthermore, the Village will provide desperately needed work force housing.

I along with members of the Fowler United Methodist Church are asking this council to sponsor an amendment allowing the Village at Bestgate to happen. We strongly support this proposal. This village will not only be good for those of us who live and work on Bestgate Road, it will also help our entire county.
