A 35-year-old Eldersburg mother was killed and her month-old daughter and two others were injured Saturday night in a head-on collision on Liberty Road, a short distance west of the border of Carroll and Baltimore counties, state police reported.

Tyette Hester of the 5600 block of Compton Lane was driving a 1995 Honda Prelude west on Liberty, just west of Oakland Mills Road, about 9:45 p.m., when for no apparent reason she crossed into the opposite lane of traffic and collided with a 1999 Ford Explorer driven by Gary Geelhaar, 41, of the 11200 block of Liberty Road in Owings Mills, police said.

Hester was pronounced dead after being flown by state police helicopter to Maryland Shock Trauma Center. The infant and Geelhaar were flown to Johns Hopkins Hospital, while a passenger in the Explorer was taken to Carroll County General Hospital -- all treated for minor injuries.

Police said the infant's life was saved because she was properly secured in an approved infant car seat, and was facing to the rear of the vehicle.

FOR THE RECORD - An article in yesterday's editions about an accident that killed an Eldersburg woman incorrectly stated the gender of her month-old son, who survived the crash on Liberty Road in Carroll County.
