Spring has arrived. OK, we're lying. But the spring makeup lines of several leading cosmetics companies have arrived, so we thought we'd share.

Here's the word on what's hot for this coming season:

The company: Elizabeth Arden

The line: Watercolors

The look: Classic chic. Take your pick between the pale shimmery shades of the Caribbean or the vibrant, energetic palette of the Mediterranean.

The colors: Caribbean colors include eye shadows in smooth teals and corals, peach bisque rouge and coral lipstick. In the Mediterranean line, pick from bright blue or sunny yellow eye color, warm apricot cheeks and vibrant brownish mango lip color.

Who would wear it: Anyone in need of a tropical vacation, your neighbor who drives the Buick and looks like Kathleen Turner, your mother.

The verdict: Watercolors feel a tad diluted. There are few surprises here, but the colors are warm and comforting.

Available for $13.50 to $28 at Macy's and Hecht's beginning in March.

The company: MAC

The line: Pop Mode

The look: Fake is fabulous when you mix soft, girly pinks with a wide range of plums. Take some the big fake lashes loaded with mascara, add bright blue eye shadow and finish off with frosted lipstick in the palest pink.

The colors: Grape, fuchsia, metallic silver and periwinkle blue. Hubba hubba.

Who would wear it: Tammy Faye Baker, Vegas showgirls, Britney Spears.

The verdict: Anyone older than 15 should be prohibited from wearing a full complement of MAC's Pop line at once. Taken in small doses, however, the colors are fresh and pretty, not a bit trashy.

The company: Clinique

The line: Lightwashed

The look: Soft, sheer and sun-kissed -- the idea here is to look healthy, not trampy. Smooth a little Colour Rub Allover Lustre as a finishing touch for that luminous look that doesn't come naturally to most of us.

The colors: Iridescent white washes for the eyes and face, pink, pink and more pink nails, and petal pink or bronze lips.

Who would wear it: Sandra Bullock, your yoga instructor, the girl next door.

The verdict: A winner. Yet again Clinique has succeeded at giving us natural-looking make-up that's feminine and pretty.

Available for $12.50 to $15.50 at Hecht's, Macy's and other department stores.

The company: Chanel

The line: Spring Collection 2003

The look: "It's about the sport of seduction," Chanel's Karl Lagerfeld has been quoted as saying about his spring 2003 ready-to-wear line. We think this means putting on a lot of eye makeup before going out to play tennis, but we're not sure. At any rate, the company's spring "Beaute" collection contrasts two looks -- delicate and daring -- and is big on black eye shadow worn with a messy brushstroke.

The colors: Black and white, silver and gold, red and beige, not to mention peach and chocolate.

Who would wear it: Tennis star Anna Kournikova, the snotty saleswoman at the precious boutique with the gorgeous clothes, your alter ego.

The verdict: We're hooked. Chanel's rich colors and sleek packaging leave us wanting more.
