Extension office offers class on fruit tree care

The Carroll County extension office will hold a workshop on the care of fruit trees at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 11 at the office on Smith Avenue extended in Westminster.

Bryan Butler, extension educator, will discuss pruning, disease and insect control.

The cost is $5 and reservations are required.

Assistance loan deadline extended to March 31

The Carroll County Farm Service Agency has announced that the final loan availability date to request a wool or mohair marketing assistance loan or LDP (loan deficiency payment), or an LDP for unshorn lamb pelts has been extended to March 31.

The extended loan availability date for crop year 2002 applies to eligible producers who lost beneficial interest in the commodity before Oct. 11, and for eligible producers who continue to maintain beneficial interest in the commodity.

Mosner named president of state fair society

Howard "Max" Mosner of Carroll County has been elected president and general manager of the Maryland State Fair & Agricultural Society by the board of directors.

Mosner has been with the state fair for 40 years, most recently as vice president and general manager. He will continue to oversee the daily operations at the Maryland State Fairgrounds.

He is a nationally recognized leader in the fair industry, and his expertise is sought by fair organizers around the country, said D. Andrew Cashman, Maryland State Fair assistant general manager.

F. Grove Miller continues as chairman of the board of the Maryland State Fair and Agricultural Society.
