Woman sentenced in tax scheme

January 31, 2003|BY A SUN STAFF WRITER

A Randallstown woman who enlisted her sister, two stepdaughters and her husband's ex-wife in a tax return scheme that netted nearly $200,000 was sentenced in federal court yesterday to two months in jail.

Valerie Batts, 42, also was ordered to spend 10 months in home detention. She pleaded guilty in the fall to conspiring to defraud the government after Internal Revenue Service investigators discovered she had filed fake tax returns created on her home computer.

Court records show that Batts used female relatives, also charged in the case, to provide names and Social Security numbers for the false returns in exchange for a share of money refunded by the IRS.
