Teacher accused of student sex abuse quits

January 30, 2003|BY A SUN STAFF WRITER

An Arundel High School English teacher and drama coach who was charged with abusing a student last year has resigned, Anne Arundel County school officials said yesterday.

The teacher, Lawrence Alan Mintline Jr. of Glen Burnie, is accused of having sexual contact with a 16-year-old male student in July.

Mintline submitted the resignation Jan. 14, before a scheduled disciplinary hearing, said Mark Black, supervisor of investigations for the schools. Black declined to comment further on the case.

But Black said the school system is required by law to report to state officials any employee who resigns after being accused of sexual misconduct with a student and who has not been cleared of the allegations.

Mintline, 36, who has been suspended without pay since his arrest Oct. 8, could not be reached for comment. His trial on two counts of child abuse and other charges is expected to begin Feb. 11.
