MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL: Announced that committee studying future city of Expos will start meeting with interested community groups next week.

ANGELS: Placed P Lou Pote on waivers.

BREWERS: Claimed OF Brady Clark off waivers from Mets. Agreed to minor-league contract with P Chuck Smith and invited him to major-league camp.

CUBS: Agreed to minor-league contract with free-agent IF-OF Charles Gipson, who had been with Mariners, and invited him to major-league camp. Assigned former Orioles minor-league IF Augie Ojeda outright to Triple-A Iowa but invited him to major-league camp.

DEVIL RAYS: Signed free-agent 1B Lee Stevens, who had been with Indians, and free-agent P Bob Wells, who had been with Twins, to minor-league contracts with invitations to major-league camp.

METS: Agreed to one-year, $950,000 contract with P Scott Strickland. Named Bob Ojeda pitching coach at Double-A Binghamton, Howard Johnson hitting instructor at Single-A St. Lucie and Hector Berrios pitching coach and Roger LaFrancois hitting coach at short-season Single-A Brooklyn.

TWINS: Agreed to one-year, $1.75 million contract with 1B Doug Mientkiewicz. Signed free-agent P Jose Cabrera, who had been with Brewers, to minor-league contract.


NBA: Named Mike Fratello and Cotton Fitzsimmons coaches in Rookie Challenge game Feb. 9. Announced deal that allows Sirius Satellite Radio to carry live broadcasts of up to 40 games a week.

NETS: Activated G Brandon Armstrong. Placed F Rodney Rogers on injured list.

LYNX (WNBA): Named Suzie McConnell Serio coach.


BOWIE STATE: DE Charles Alston was named Black College All-American.

CENTRAL ARKANSAS: Reassigned basketball coach Charles Hervey. Named David James interim coach.

GOUCHER: Capital Athletic Conference named Stephanie LaGue women's Swimmer of the Week.

JOHNS HOPKINS: Centennial Conference named C Kathy Darling women's basketball Player of the Week.

UMES: MEAC named Tee Trotter men's basketball Player of the Week.

MOUNT ST. MARY'S: NEC named Laura Jezek and Chris Turner women's and men's indoor track and field Rookies of the Week, respectively.

PIKEVILLE: Announced resignation of football coach John Gilliam.

RUTGERS: Announced that freshman basketball F Cortez Davis is leaving school and junior basketball C Harry Good has left team and will transfer to another school.

TOWSON: CAA named F Lawrence Hamm men's basketball Rookie of the Week. East Atlantic Gymnastics League named Kristen Presutti Gymnast of the Week.


NFC: Added Vikings RB Michael Bennett, Eagles QB Donovan McNabb and Eagles OT Jon Runyan to Pro Bowl roster, replacing injured Packers RB Ahman Green, Packers QB Brett Favre and Rams OT Orlando Pace. Named Eagles TE Chad Lewis to Pro Bowl roster as coach's choice. Announced that Packers WR Donald Driver, a first alternate, will play for injured Vikings WR Randy Moss.

BEARS: Announced resignation of defensive line coach Rex Norris.

BENGALS: Named Bob Bratkowski offensive coordinator, Leslie Frazier defensive coordinator, Paul Alexander assistant head coach/offensive line coach, Ken Zampese quarterbacks coach, Jim Anderson running backs coach, Alex Wood wide receivers coach, Bob Surace offensive assistant, Jay Hayes defensive line coach, Ricky Hunley linebackers coach, Kevin Coyle defensive backs coach, Louie Cioffi assistant defensive backs coach, Darrin Simmons special teams coach, Chip Morton strength and conditioning coach and Kurtis Shultz (Maryland) assistant strength and conditioning coach.
