Athletes of the Week

January 22, 2003

Chris Walters

Havre de Grace, swimming

The senior won a maximum allowable four events during each of two tri-meets within three days last week to help the Warriors stay undefeated (12-0).

Walters swam in four of the first eight events -- considered among the most grueling -- so he could leave early and participate in rehearsals for Harford County's prestigious All-County chorus and All-County orchestra.

Havre de Grace, by far the smallest school in Harford County, defeated North Harford and Edgewood on Jan. 14. Walters won the 200-yard freestyle and 100 butterfly and powered the 200 medley and 200 free relays to victory.

The Warriors defeated C. Milton Wright and Aberdeen on Thursday, again relying on Walters' victories in the 200 individual medley and 100 fly, as well as his relay contributions again on the winning 200 medley and 200 free teams.

Laura Hostetler

River Hill, basketball

The senior scored 16 points and had four rebounds, three assists and six steals in a 62-51 win over No. 4 Glenelg that kept the No. 2 Hawks perfect in Howard County. She also contributed 29 points, eight rebounds, three assists and seven steals in a 65-32 rout of Liberty.

The niece of former NFL quarterback Jeff Hostetler, the 5-foot-10 All-County forward/guard leads the Hawks with 18.5 points a game and also averages 6.8 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 3.0 steals. She plays Amateur Athletic Union basketball, but she will play lacrosse in college. The All-Howard County player signed early with George Washington.

Hostetler carries a 4.3 weighted grade point average and an SAT score of 1,140.
