Student achiever

January 22, 2003

Student: Sarah Brown, 16

School: Howard High

Special achievement: Sarah was chosen to participate in a Congressional Youth Leadership Conference during which students learn about how government works through a mock Congress and other exercises.

Why she cares about government: "I thought it would be interesting to know exactly what they do in Congress and how they decide on laws," she said. Sarah said that she also thought the conference would help her learn "how to become a lead- er." She said she's interested in how government works, but still not sure whether she wants to pursue a career in public service.

Hitting the books: Sarah is a candidate for the National Honor Society.

Community service: Sarah performs with the Handbell Choir at her church, First Presbyterian Church of Howard County. The bell-ringers practice once a week, she said.

Other interests: Sarah plays the clarinet in the school's marching and symphonic bands, and is a member of the varsity soccer team. She played junior varsity lacrosse last year and hopes to play on the varsity team this season.
