CARDINALS: Agreed to one-year, $900,000 contract with free-agent P Dustin Hermanson, who had been with Red Sox.

DEVIL RAYS: Signed free-agent P Jim Parque, who had been with White Sox, and OF Ryan Thompson (Chestertown), who had been with Brewers, to minor-league contracts.

MARINERS: Agreed to one-year, $1 million contract with C Ben Davis.

WHITE SOX: Agreed to one-year contract with free-agent P Tom Gordon, who had been with Astros.

BULLS: Placed G Jay Williams on injured list with left ankle sprain. Activated G Rick Brunson.

CAVALIERS: Fired coach John Lucas (Maryland). Named Keith Smart coach.

MISSOURI: Reinstated men's basketball G Ricky Clemons, who served one-game suspension this past weekend after he was charged with choking a woman.

TEXAS A&M: Suspended C Andy Slocum from men's basketball team indefinitely; he was charged Sunday with felony possession of steroids found in his truck.

VIRGINIA COMMONWEALTH: Announced that women's basketball coach David Glass (89-95) will resign at end of season and be replaced by former Mystics G Beth Cunningham.

NFL: Fined Giants TE Jeremy Shockey $10,000 for throwing cup of ice into stands and making obscene gesture toward fans during playoff game Jan. 5.
