Dieticians to offer tips, recipes at supermarkets

The county health department's Learn to Live program has teamed up with several dieticians to aid county residents get information about healthy eating , cancer prevention and obtaining free low-fat recipes. Dieticians will be at the following food stores:

Friday , 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., at Metro Food Stores at Pasadena Crossroads Shopping Center, 8160 Ritchie Highway, in Pasadena, 5722 Ritchie Highway, Baltimore, and Box N Save, 7931 Baltimore-Annapolis Blvd., in Glen Burnie.

FOR THE RECORD - A listing in Health Notes in the Anne Arundel edition Tuesday gave the wrong date for a meeting. The Conquer Cancer in Anne Arundel County Advisory Council will hold its next meeting from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., Feb. 19 in Lower Level Conference Room B, Health Services Building, 3 Harry S. Truman Parkway, Annapolis.

Saturday, 10 a.m. to noon, Giant Food, 3130 Solomons Island Road, in Edgewater and 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Giant Food, 6626 Ritchie Highway, in Glen Burnie.

Sewage disposal tests begin today

The county Department of Health, Community and Environmental Health Division will begin annual wet season site evaluations and percolation tests beginning today. Applicants are encouraged to submit wet season applications as soon a possible so that each site may be properly evaluated for conventional, alternative, innovative and mound sewage disposal systems.

For the 2003 season testing, applications should be received by April 1. However, applications for mound sewage disposal systems should be received by March 1, since testing for this type of system must be performed by March 17.

Testing is on a first-come, first-served basis.

Free health screenings given at Marley Station

Marley Station mall and North Arundel Hospital will co-sponsor free health screenings for members of the Marley Milers walking program and area residents. North Arundel Hospital physicians and health care professionals will provide the screenings from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. on these dates:

April 2: Skin cancer

June 5: Pulmonary function

Aug. 7: Hearing

Oct. 2: Vision

Dec. 4: Carpal tunnel syndrome

The hospital also offers blood pressure screenings from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. the third Thursday of each month at Relaxation Station in the mall.

Reservations are not required. Participants are screened on a first-come, first-served basis. Information: 410-787-4367.


Neck, back screenings: North Arundel Hospital will offer computerized neck and back screenings from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Friday at its Arundel Mills storefront, between entrance No. 4 and Jillian's. 443-755-8773.

Child, family services: The county Health Department is offering outpatient mental health and substance abuse treatment services to those without medical insurance for county children ages 5 to 18 and their families. Mental health services and referrals: 410-222-6785, and substance abuse, 410-222-6725, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Women's health: Harbor Hospital will offer HealthTalks breast and cervical cancer updates and free screenings at 11 a.m. today at the hospital's LifeResource Center, Room A. Registration is required. 410-350-8255.

Diabetes seminar: Harbor Hospital will hold a seminar on diabetes management at 11 a.m. tomorrow at the hospital's LifeResource Center, Room B. Registration is required. The first 10 registrants will receive a gift. 410-350-8255.

Nutrition and aerobics: Anne Arundel Medical Center and Spy Aquatics in Severna Park will co-sponsor a program, "Weigh to Go," incorporating weekly nutrition session and water aerobics from tomorrow through March 22. Nutrition classes will be held from 6:15 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. Wednesdays. The aerobics sessions will be from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays. The cost of the course is $80, plus $50 for swimming sessions. Registration is required. 443-481-4000.

Mental illness support: The National Alliance for the Mentally Ill, Anne Arundel County Affiliate will sponsor series of classes for families with persons with serious psychiatric disabilities. The classes will run from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesdays, beginning tomorrow and continuing for 12 weeks. Classes will take place at the Calvary Methodist Church, 301 Rowe Blvd., Annapolis. The class is limited to 20 participants. 410-263-5074.

Posture screenings: North Arundel Hospital will offer free digital posture screenings from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Thursday at its Arundel Mills storefront, between entrance No. 4 and Jillian's. 443-755-8773.

Time management: A two-part seminar on time management will be held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday and Jan. 30 in the second-floor meeting room of Anne Arundel Medical Center's Sajak Pavilion, 2003 Medical Parkway. 443-481-4000.
