Eclectic finds in Federal Hill

Painted a cheery yellow and filled with light, Zelda Zen is a 300-square-foot Federal Hill shop brimming with surprises.

For starters, there's the colorful jewelry, including a spidery free-form crystal bracelet ($10), crystal hairsticks (right, $12) and a four-strand turquoise necklace ($32). Other finds include red "Beatle" boots by Dansko, beaded leather dog leashes and collars, Votivo candles and funky handknit merino sweaters. And then there are the feminine (yet still flashy) hats created by store owner Beth Hawks that mix leopard with florals, velvets and brocade ($55).

The small store, named for Hawks' beloved husky-shepherd crossbreed, who died last year, opened in June. Hawks describes the place as "eclectic and affordable." She strives to offer items by local and national artists as well as women's accessories and home decor items.

Hawks, who used to own a clothing store in Fells Point called Cowboy Buddha, lives upstairs from Zelda Zen. When the weather warms up, she plans on landscaping the plot out back and adding garden accessories to her inventory. Also on the way, she says, is a selection of items for babies.

Zelda Zen is at 46 East Cross St., across from Cross Street Market. 410-625-2424.

A change of local scenery

Day after day, the same winter coat gets hauled out of the closet. The drudgery is enough to make us throw caution to the wind and venture outdoors coatless.

Turn the winter blahs around with a Lands' End reversible goose-down parka. Available in 12 colors and sized for men and women, the $88 coat doubles your winter fashion fun. Or something like that.

For a catalog call 800-356-4444, or order online at www.landsend.com.

It's time for color

The lack of color outdoors makes a shot of color indoors a more-than-welcome addition to the winter months.

The folks at Movado are here to help. The company's Elliptica Sapphire watch takes the boring white watch face and solid dark or gold band and gives it a dose of color. The contoured timepiece has a mother-of-pearl dial, colored sapphire bezel and matte alligator band in petal pink, light blue, lilac, coral, fuchsia, yellow or spring green.

The Elliptica costs $2,990 and is available at select Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus stores, or by calling 888-4MOVADO.

Getting enough fruit?

Christmas was a month ago, and you didn't get any yuzu.

Don't fear. Lather's Sugar Cane Body Buff is formulated not only with yuzu, a type of citrus fruit popular in Japan, but also with cane sugar that works to exfoliate dull skin cells and leave skin radiant and fresh. Safflower oil and phospholipids then soften the skin and create a barrier to lock in moisture. In addition to yuzu, the buff also contains essential oils including pink grapefruit, ylang ylang, jasmine, mimosa and oakwood.

Lather's Yuzu Sugar Cane Body Buff costs $24 for four ounces and is available at www.latherup.com.
