Two young children die in I-70 crash

January 19, 2003|BY A SUN STAFF WRITER

Two children died yesterday after a car driven by one of their fathers crashed on Interstate 70 in Cooksville.

Lindsay Lazo, 8, of Laurel, and Amanda Smith, 6, of Keedysville in Washington County, were dead when they were discovered by Maryland State police about 10:50 a.m. in a wrecked Jeep Cherokee off of the eastbound side I-70 near Route 97.

Smith's father, Douglas Scott Smith, 38, was driving the car, police said. He was taken to Maryland Shock Trauma Center and was in serious condition last night, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Lindsay Lazo was in the front seat and was not wearing a seat belt, police said. Amanda Smith was in the back seat and did buckle up, police added.

Police are unsure what caused the accident but do not believe another car was involved.
