Rainbow Theatre opening with Beale Street Puppets

January 15, 2003

The Wilde Lake Community Association's Rainbow Theatre begins its 2003 season Friday with two performances of Snowflakes by the Beale Street Puppets of Baltimore.

Willy the Walrus, Pippin Polar Bear, Jack Frost, the Juggling Bears and Snowflake Showgirls will celebrate the winter season. "It's actually sort of the Christmas show that doesn't have any Christmas," said Jill Kyle-Keith, "owner and queen" of Beale Street Puppets, now in her 27th year as a puppeteer.

"It is a big show. We have a lot of penguins - it's very penguin-heavy. We've got these Snowflake Showgirls, we have a singing walrus. It's actually one of my favorite shows," said Kyle-Keith, who also sells antiques - and sometimes puppets - on eBay, in partnership with her brother.

"If any puppets annoy us, that's it. Boom, boom. Land of eBay," she said.

The show runs for about 45 minutes, and includes a 10-minute question period and a backstage look at some of the puppets' tricks. Performances are scheduled at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. at Slayton House in Wilde Lake Village Center.

"Doing Slayton House is really a treat because it's a real theater, Kyle-Keith said.

Creatures Great and Small, by the group Kathleen Jacobs and Puppets, is scheduled for Feb. 21. "This year is all puppet shows," said Janice Friedel, programs and events coordinator for the community association. "It seems like [the children] wanted more of the puppet shows because it was the younger ones coming."

Tickets, which are $4, should be purchased in advance, although some tickets may be available at the door for $5.
