ANGELS: Announced that they have moved season opener against Rangers from April 1 to March 30.

BRAVES: Signed SS Rafael Furcal, 2000 National League Rookie of the Year, to one-year, $2.2 million contract.

BREWERS: Signed free-agent P Dave Mlicki, who had been with Astros, to one-year contract. Signed P Mike Buddie to minor-league contract with invitation to spring training. Named Jim Bathey assistant vice president of ticket sales. Named Fernando Arango central and north Florida scout.

INDIANS: Named Derek Shelton hitting coordinator.

MARINERS: Announced that they received permission from commissioner's office and players association to open spring training on Feb. 9 because of their season opener against Athletics in Tokyo.

MARLINS: Signed OF Gerald Williams to one-year contract.

ORIOLES: Announced that Double-A Frederick named Ed Maurer assistant director of ticket operations, Mike McAtee box office manager and Bryan Burns public relations assistant. Promoted Jennifer Martenot to director of box office operations.

ROYALS: Agreed to terms with IF Desi Relaford on two-year contract.

GARY (INDEPENDENT): Hired former major-league All-Star Garry Templeton as manager.


NBA: Announced that Board of Governors unanimously approved granting of expansion team to Charlotte, with Robert Johnson as its owner.

BUCKS: Activated F Toni Kukoc. Placed G Ron Murray on injured list with left shoulder tendinitis.

HAWKS: Placed F Chris Crawford on injured list. Signed G Mike Wilks to 10-day contract.

HORNETS: Signed G Robert Pack to 10-day contract. Placed G Bryce Drew on injured list with inflamed left foot.

WIZARDS: Activated G Juan Dixon (Maryland). Placed F Brian Cardinal on injured list with left knee tendinitis.

SAN ANTONIO (WNBA): Announced its nickname will be Silver Stars.

SPARKS (WNBA): Announced resignation of Glenn McDonald, assistant coach.


OSCAR DE LA HOYA: Announced that he will fight Yory Boy Campas on May 3 at Mandalay Bay hotel-casino in Las Vegas.


CALIFORNIA: Named Justin Wilcox linebackers coach.

COLORADO: Announced that RB Chris Brown will forego his senior year and make himself available for NFL draft.

EAST CAROLINA: Named J.B. Grimes offensive line/assistant head coach, Steve Janski tight ends coach, Matt Graves defensive backs coach, Mike Ritchie director of football operations, Larry Shannon, offensive graduate assistant and Shep Campbell defensive graduate assistant.

FRANKLIN: Named Mike Leonard football coach.

KANSAS STATE: Named Del Miller co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Announced Greg Peterson will move from passing game coordinator to co-offensive coordinator. Named Joe Bob Clements defensive ends coach and Bob Stanley offensive line coach. Announced that LB Terry Pierce will forgo his senior season and make himself available for NFL draft. Announced sophomore F Marcelo Da Barrosa has left men's basketball team.

KENTUCKY: Named Ron Hudson offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, Paul Dunn offensive line coach and running backs coordinator and Joker Phillips recruiting coordinator and wide receivers coach.

MASSACHUSETTS: Announced basketball F Stephen Briggs will return to the team Jan. 17 after he was dismissed for an unspecified rules violation in October.

NAVY: Announced that senior DT Derek Jaskowiak will play in 2003 Hula Bowl, set for Feb. 1 in Maui's War Memorial Stadium in Hawaii.

NEW ORLEANS: Named Jim Miller athletic director.

NORTH CAROLINA: Hired Michael Burnett as assistant men's lacrosse coach.

OREGON: Announced that RB Onterrio Smith and TE George Wrighster will forgo their seniors seasons and make themselves available for NFL draft.

PENN STATE: Announced basketball G Melanie Croser has won an appeal of her NCAA suspension for unsanctioned summer league in Australia and is eligible to play immediately.

RICHMOND: Announced that G Jason Morton has left men's basketball team.

SOUTH CAROLINA: Named Jappy Oliver defensive line coach.

SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI: Named David Warner wide receivers coach.

TENNESSEE: Announced resignation of offensive line coach Mike Barry.

TOWSON: Announced that senior Zak Smith was named to 2003 Inside Lacrosse/Face-Off Yearbook preseason All-America first team. Senior Danny Cocchi was named to second team. Senior defenseman Adam Baxter (Severna Park) was named to third team. Senior Ryan Obloj was honorable mention.

UCLA: Named Larry Kerr defensive coordinator.

WEST VIRGINIA: Promoted linebackers coach Jeff Casteel to defensive coordinator. Casteel will continue as linebackers coach.


BEARS: Extended contract of TE Dustin Lyman through 2004 season.

BENGALS: Announced resignation of defensive line coach Tim Krumrie, who will take same job with Bills.

BRONCOS: Signed DT Russell Newman.

BROWNS: Named Dave Campo defensive coordinator.

CARDINALS: Re-signed defensive coordinator Larry Marmie, defensive line coach Joe Greene, linebackers coach Jeff FitzGerald and special teams coach Hank Kuhlmannhave to two-year contracts.
