Vince Cina

River Hill

A junior-national Greco-Roman champion, the 103-pound junior continued an undefeated season by recording three victories last week. Cina's pin in 1:10 over Ricky Flynn helped the Hawks (9-1) hand perennial power Damascus of Montgomery County its first dual-meet loss of the season Saturday. Flynn was a runner-up earlier this season in the Damascus tournament.

Cina, who finished third last summer in junior-national freestyle, improved to 13-0 with 10 pins. He also picked up a pin against Lackey and a forfeit against Wilde Lake in a tri-meet Thursday.

Ranked No. 2 at 103 pounds by The Sun, Cina has a 64-22 career record and was a fourth-place regional finisher last season. The only national champion from Howard County, Cina carries a 4.0 grade-point average.

GIRLS

Mone't Johnson

Southside, basketball

The senior forward/guard led the Jaguars to the biggest upset in the history of their young program -- a 54-51 overtime win over Dunbar of Washington, the 11th-ranked team by The Washington Post.

Johnson scored 16 points and had 12 rebounds and three assists as the Jaguars improved to 5-1 and cracked The Sun's Top 20 this week for the first time. The versatile 5-foot-9 1/2 swing player averages 14 points, 10 rebounds and three steals while shooting nearly 50 percent from the field.

Johnson has been with the Jaguars since they began playing JV in her freshman year. She jumped to varsity last season. Also a volleyball and softball player at Southside, Johnson has a 4.0 GPA and plans a career in computer engineering.
