Medline Industries Inc. plans to open a $12 million, 300,000- square-foot medical product processing and distribution facility in Harford County, the company and the county said yesterday.

The manufacturer and distributor of health care supplies and services has about 40 workers at facilities it rents in Harford. As business develops, Medline plans to expand the new facility to 400,000 square feet and hire 60 extra workers.

"We've been working with them for 18 months," said J. Thomas Sadowski, director of the Harford County Office of Economic Development.

"We were scouting sites, and we had them in rental space as we worked to get them to commit to a site. They'll start construction when the weather permits," he said. "We're glad to have a company of their caliber come to the county."

Medline purchased 24 acres from a local investment group called DBB LLC in the proposed Rock Glen Business Center off Robin Hood Road and U.S. 40 in Aberdeen. Sadowski said the company looked at available properties in the county, but officials decided to build and own their building.

The facility will service customers in the mid-Atlantic region.

The property Medline purchased lies in a state enterprise zone, which will qualify the company for tax credits when the facility is open. No other incentives were offered.

"We are pleased to welcome yet another quality company to Harford County and the Route 40 Corridor in Aberdeen," Harford County Executive James M. Harkins said in a statement. "I met with Medline officials during a recent Greater Baltimore Alliance trip to Chicago and was very impressed by the company and their plans for the future. We are committed to their continued success here in Harford County."

Medline, based in Mundelein, Ill., has 22 other distribution sites, five manufacturing plants and six customer-service centers around the country and sells products globally.

Medline says it is the nation's largest privately held manufacturer and distributor of health care supplies and services. The company's Web site says it manufactures and distributes more than 100,000 medical products, including surgical items.
