Library to present stories, puppets, celebrate 10th anniversary

The Mount Airy library branch, 705 Ridge Ave., will offer:

"Year-round Story Time" for all ages (age 3 and younger must be with an adult) at 11 a.m. today on "Hungry Animals," at 11 a.m. tomorrow, and at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. Tuesday on "Happy Birthday Mount Airy Library."

"Internet Basics: Keeping it Simple" for teens and adults who want to learn how to navigate the Internet, at 11 a.m. tomorrow.

"Mount Airy 10th Anniversary Celebration" for all ages at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. The library is celebrating 10 years at its Ridge Avenue location with cake and punch, a photo display and talks from the people who helped shape the library.

"The Mitten -- A Winter Puppet Show" at 7 p.m. Thursday and 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Jan. 10 for all ages (age 3 and younger with an adult). Children can help Corky the Penguin find his mitten.

"Read With Me -- Happy Birthday Mount Airy Library" at 10 a.m. Jan. 10 for ages 4 to 6 years. This theme-based story time is for children who are ready for an independent, small group experience.

"Words and Music -- the Ballad Novels of Sharyn McCrumb" for teens and adults at 1:30 p.m. Jan. 11. McCrumb, an Appalachian author, and traditional musician Jack Hinshekwood will discuss their six "ballad novels" and perform music. Books will be available for purchase and signing. Snow date is Jan. 18.

La Leche League meets Wednesdays, Saturdays

La Leche League of Mount Airy meets twice a month to offer breast-feeding support and information to new mothers.

Meetings are held at 12:30 p.m. the second Wednesday and 10 a.m. the second Saturday of the month at Calvary United Methodist Church, 403 S. Main St.

Pregnant women, babies and children are welcome. Meetings are canceled if schools are delayed or closed because of bad weather.

Mount Airy council: Mount Airy Town Council will meet at 7:30 p.m. Monday at Town Hall, 110 S. Main St. 410-795-6012.

Around town

Legion bingo: American Legion Gold Star Post 191 of Mount Airy will hold daytime bingo every Wednesday and evening games every Thursday at its hall at 801 Prospect Road. On Wednesday, doors open at 11:30 a.m. for lunch at noon, followed by games from 12:45 p.m. to 3 p.m. The cost is $13 for 21 regular games and $2 for early bird games. Doors open Thursday at 5:30 p.m., with food at 6 p.m. and games at 7 p.m. 301- 831-7077.
