Taneytown Economic Development Commission to meet Jan. 10

Taneytown Economic Development Commission will hold its monthly business breakfast at 7:30 a.m. Jan. 10 at Thunderhead Bowling Centre at Routes 140 and 832.

Guest speaker Mark Brodinsky will discuss self-employment insurance.

The cost for breakfast is $5.50, payable at the meeting. Reservations are required by Wednesday at 410-751-1100.

Boyds Bear, basket bingo at Union Bridge fire hall

Union Bridge Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary will hold a basket and Boyds Bear bingo Jan. 10 at the fire hall on West Locust Street.

Doors will open at 5 p.m. and games will begin at 7 p.m. Food will be available at 5:30 p.m., including fried chicken platters for $5, and baked goods.

Tickets are $15 and include a set of three cards for 22 games.

Additional cards for raffles and jackpot games will be sold separately.

Seats must be reserved by Tuesday. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.

Stories, applique class are scheduled at library

The Taneytown library branch, 10 Grand Drive, will offer:

"Year-round Family Story Time" for all ages (age 3 and younger must be with an adult) at 9:45 a.m. today on "Best Friends" and 7 p.m. Wednesday on "Pig Tales."

"On My Own Story Time: Best Friends" for ages 3 to 6 years at 1:30 p.m. today. This theme-based story time is for children who are ready for an independent small-group experience.

Infant Specials for ages birth to 2 years (with an adult caregiver) at 9:45 a.m. Saturday. Story time, lap games, bounces and rhymes, with a play group afterward, will be featured.

"Jump Into Applique" at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 9 and 16 for adults. Students will learn basic freezer-paper applique techniques using heart and leaf shapes and will complete a quilted pillow top. A materials list will be provided at registration.

Basketball, volleyball, karate on rec calendar

Taneytown Area Recreation Council has announced programs.

Noncompetitive recreational volleyball for ages 18 and older is played from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. Wednesdays at Northwest Middle School gym. The program continues every week Jan. 8 to June 4. The cost is $20 for the season or $1 a week.

Tae Kwon Do-style karate classes are held from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays year-round at Taneytown Senior Center. The cost is $45 a month or $55 for the family. Registration is open. A uniform is required. Information: 410-848- 6682.

Youth basketball for children in first through fourth grades will begin Jan. 18 at Taneytown Elementary School. Registration for the introductory eight-week class will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Jan. 10 and 13 and 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 11 at the school. The cost is $20.

Free-throw competition will be held from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 26 (snow date is Feb. 2) at Northwest Middle School for boys and girls ages 10 to 14. Proof of age and parental consent are required. Registration will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 11 and 18 (snow date Jan. 25) at the school and from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 26. Information: 410-756-1214.

Keysville Evangelical Lutheran: Worship with Holy Communion will be held at 10:30 a.m. Sunday with Deacon Charles Barnhart Jr. preaching, "Why? Why? Why?"
