In what police described as "an execution-style slaying," a man was fatally shot last night moments after entering an audio store in the Frankford community in Northeast Baltimore, police said. No arrests had been made.

The shooting was the city's 253rd homicide of the year, compared with 256 in 2001, police said.

Last night's victim, whose name was withheld pending notification of family members, entered Digital Audio Connection in the 4800 block of Belair Road about 6:30 p.m. and immediately became involved in a brief conversation with two or three men who followed him into the store.

Before the victim could approach the counter, where at least one employee stood, one of the men pulled a handgun and shot the victim multiple times, including at least once in the head, said Officer Nicole Monroe, a police spokeswoman.

Monroe said the victim, believed to be a city resident, fell to the floor near the front door and died almost instantly. She said the gunman and those with him fled and were last seen running east on nearby Southern Avenue, passing the victim's late-model Acura Legend parked next to the store. She said the shooting was not random.

Anyone with information is urged to call the homicide squad at 410-396-2100.
