WINE OF THE WEEK

January 01, 2003|By Michael Dresser | Michael Dresser,SUN STAFF

2001 Solyss Salento Rosso ($11). This full-bodied, intensely flavorful red wine from the Puglia region of Italy (the heel of the "boot") offers exceptional value. The native negroamaro and primitivo grapes combine to deliver a smooth wine with lush blackberry and blueberry fruit flavors with nuances of Italian herbs. This wine nears a distinct resemblance to a fine California zinfandel, but the price beats most zins of this quality. It's so appealing in its youth there's no reason to cellar it for long. Serve it with red meat, pasta or hard cheese.
