Soothing sounds in time for the holidays

NEIGHBORS

December 19, 2002|By Joni Guhne , SPECIAL TO THE SUN

JUST WHEN holiday demands have us feeling as if we're going round in circles, Trinitas, an a cappella trio with Kate Caldwell of Severna Park and Jane Elkin and Carolyn Sonnen of Broadneck, offers a soothing solution.

The trio's new compact disc, Songs of the Labyrinth, is filled with the peaceful sounds of sacred music and chant. The melodies, dating from the ninth century to the present, are arranged to accompany meditation, quiet prayer or a labyrinth walk. A religious labyrinth, Caldwell says, is described as "an ancient sacred symbol of a pilgrimage to the divine."

Included in the CD is "O Sacrum Convivium" by Severna Park composer Raymond Weidner, choir director at Woods Memorial Presbyterian Church. The trio is accompanied by Annapolis Symphony Orchestra harpist Susan Saurwein on Weidner's composition.

The trio was organized last year to provide live music for the labyrinth walks at Gloria Dei! Lutheran Church in Arnold. Hesychia, a Greek word for inner peace through prayer, is also the name of a local ecumenical group that meets for contemplative forms of prayer. Hesychia sponsored the labyrinth walks and conducts prayer sessions every second and fourth Wednesday at St. Anne Episcopal Church on Church Circle in Annapolis.

Trinitas will perform at First Night Annapolis on Dec. 31. Songs of the Labyrinth is available at the Christian Book Store and the Hard Bean Cafe in Annapolis and at the Shepherd's Nook in Severna Park.

`Cinderella' weekend

The Children's Theatre of Annapolis' production of Rogers and Hammerstein's Cinderella continues tomorrow at 7:30 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., and Sunday at 2 p.m. at Anne Arundel Community College's Pascal Center for Performing Arts.

Most of the 28 roles in the musical belong to youngsters from Broadneck and Greater Severna Park. Broadneck High School junior Sarah Espinosa is Cinderella and Broadneck High sophomore Andrew Lincoln is the prince. Annapolis resident Angie Boss, a home-schooled senior who grew up in Cape St. Claire, is the fairy godmother.

From Broadneck High are dance partners of the prince Claire Kennedy, Virginia Cowherd and Kristina Tardif, and cast members Scott Clemper, Lauren Gaba, Brittany Taylor, Aaron Chapin, Amanda Torchia and Rebecca Hollerbach.

From Severna Park High School, juniors Ashley Burke and Amy Leslie portray the stepsisters, senior Eileen Keck is the queen and sophomore Nick Keplinger-Coelius is the king. Also from Severna Park High are Jamie Boyle and Brandon Deitrick.
