UM wins ACC quarterfinal with two goals in each half

CARY, N.C. - No. 2 seed Maryland scored quickly in defeating No. 7 seed North Carolina State, 4-0, in the Atlantic Coast Conference men's soccer quarterfinals yesterday.

Sophomore striker Domenic Mediate opened Maryland's scoring in the second minute, finishing a left-to-right pass from junior Nino Marcantonio.

The No. 10-ranked Terps (15-4) earned their 2-0 halftime lead in the 36th minute when Scott Buete sent a free kick into the box that found Abe Thompson for a goal.

The second half was more of the same, with Thompson feeding Marcantonio in the 47th minute. The fourth goal for Maryland against N.C. State (5-14) came in the 71st minute when freshman Jason Garey picked off a Wolfpack pass and took it 15 yards back to the goal for the 4-0 final score.

Terps goalkeeper Noah Palmer was credited with one save and earned his seventh shutout of the season. N.C. State keeper Mitchell Watson stopped seven shots.
