Athletes of the Week

October 30, 2002

Tim Carrier

Old Mill, soccer

The junior goalie had 34 saves and two shutouts in three games, including 19 saves in Thursday's 2-1 win over then-No. 4 South River to dethrone the defending Anne Arundel County champion. It was the Patriots' first berth in the title match since the game's inception in 1994 and the first county title for the Patriots (11-2-2) since the school opened in 1976.

Carrier began the week with a 4-0 shutout of Southern, followed by a 1-0 win over South River on Tuesday. He combined for 16 saves in the two games, stopping a penalty kick against South River, and has given up only four goals in the past seven games, including five overtimes. Carrier has 114 saves this season, including a 19-save effort in a 1-1 tie with defending Class 3A state champ Severna Park. He has given up nine goals in 12 county games and has six shutouts.

Carrier has a 4.0 grade-point average and scored 1,320 on the SAT.

Lauren Centrowitz

Broadneck, cross country

The dominating junior runner won her second straight Anne Arundel County championship on Friday to lead the Bruins to their first team title in more than two decades, ending a seven-year run by Severna Park.

Centrowitz covered the 3.5-mile course at Arundel High in 21 minutes, 0.8 of a second to come away with a 33-second win over runner-up and Bruins teammate Emily Nagle.

Earlier in the season, Centrowitz - a first-team, All-Metro selection last fall - won the prestigious Bull Run Invitational at Hereford. She returned this fall with the fastest time at last year's Class 4A state meet, in which she finished second.

The Arundel Runner of the Year in cross country last season, she was the county's Performer of the Year in both indoor and outdoor track as a sophomore.
