WINE OF THE WEEK

October 30, 2002|By Michael Dresser

2001 Saint Cosme Cotes du Rhone ($12). This hearty, fruity red wine is unusual for a Cotes du Rhone because it is 100 percent syrah - the noble red grape that produces the great wines of Cote Rotie and Hermitage. This red delivers the true character of the varietal, with lush blackberry and raspberry fruit - seasoned with a hint of black pepper. Its creamy texture makes it an uncomplicated pleasure to drink without further aging. It should show especially well with a hearty beef stew, but it would also pair well with hamburger or pizza.
