FORMULA ONE: Dropped Belgian Grand Prix from schedule because of country's ban on tobacco advertising.


BRAVES: Announced that C Javy Lopez decided against free agency, instead exercising his $7 million option for 2003.

CARDINALS: Announced that C Mike Matheny had arthroscopic surgery on right shoulder and is expected to recover fully by start of spring training.

DEVIL RAYS: Named Lou Piniella manager and signed him to a four-year contract. Acquired SS Antonio Perez from Mariners for OF Randy Winn.

METS: Named Art Howe manager and signed him to four-year contract.

TWINS: Exercised option on 2003 contracts of P Eddie Guardado, P LaTroy Hawkins and C Tom Prince. Declined option on 2003 contracts of P Bob Wells and IF Denny Hocking.

WHITE SOX: Announced DH Frank Thomas will exercise his contractual right to become a conditional free agent.


BRIGHAM YOUNG: Announced that QB Ben Olson will take next two years off to serve Mormon mission.

GEORGIA: Announced that WR-PR Damien Gary will be sidelined indefinitely after having emergency surgery on bleeding muscle tear in left leg.

LOYOLA: MAAC named Vinnie Piscopo men's soccer co-Player of the Week and outside hitter Mary Hamsher volleyball Player of the Week.

MARIETTA: Announced retirement of football coach Gene Epley, effective at end of season.

MARYLAND: ACC named PR Steve Suter football Specialist of the Week.

OKLAHOMA STATE: Agreed to six-year contract extension with men's basketball coach Eddie Sutton.

TEMPLE: Signed women's basketball coach Dawn Staley to five-year contract extension.

WASHINGTON COLLEGE: Centennial Conference named F Laura Scimeca field hockey Player of the Week.


BILLS: Placed DT Tyrone Robertson on reserve/non-football illness list after he completed four-game NFL suspension for violating league's substance abuse policy.

BRONCOS: Waived G Mookie Moore.

CHARGERS: S Rodney Harrison appealed one-game suspension by NFL for helmet-to-helmet hit on Raiders WR Jerry Rice.

CHIEFS: Signed LB Quinton Caver.

FALCONS: Released WR Willie Jackson.


NHL: Named Wild LW Marion Gaborik Player of the Week.
