The Maryland Racing Commission approved racing schedules for next year at its monthly meeting yesterday at Laurel Park.

At its next meeting, Nov. 13, also at the Laurel track, the commission will consider the agreement between Magna Entertainment Corp. and the Maryland Jockey Club that calls for Magna to become majority owner of Pimlico, Laurel Park and the Bowie Training Center. The commission must approve the agreement before Magna and MJC can close the deal.

Yesterday, the commission approved 2003 thoroughbred racing dates almost identical to those approved for this year: Jan. 1 to March 31 at Laurel, April 1 to June 30 at Pimlico, July 1 to Aug. 22 at Laurel, Aug. 23 to Sept. 1 at Timonium, Sept. 2 to Oct. 4 at Pimlico and Oct. 5 to Dec. 31 at Laurel.

However, there will be no racing during Colonial Downs' meet. This year, the Virginia track raced 26 days between June 21 and July 23 and next year plans on running an additional five days.

The commission approved 140 days of harness racing next year at Rosecroft Raceway from February through December, and 40 days of racing at Ocean Downs during the summer.

NOTE: At a hearing after its regular meeting, the commission upheld the stewards' 90-day suspension of Bowie trainer Errol Wilson for possession of needles, syringes and the banned drug Procrit, or EPO.
