A suspected thief apparently drowned last night in Hogpen Creek in Essex after abandoning a stolen truck that was being pursued by Baltimore County police, authorities reported.

The man was seen about 8 p.m. stealing a work truck in the 2400 block of Holly Neck Road by people who called police.

The vehicle was pursued to Anne Avenue and Carvel Grove Road, where the man got out and jumped into the chilly waters of the narrow creek to get away in the darkness, police said.

When a ground search failed to find the man, police and fire department marine units conducted a search that ended at 10:15 p.m., when a body was pulled from the water. It was taken to the state medical examiner's office for an autopsy, and possible identification through fingerprints, police said.
