School board to hold forum on student evaluation

The Carroll County Board of Education is co-sponsoring a community forum, "What Counts," from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. tomorrow at the Carroll County Career and Technology Center.

Co-sponsors are the Maryland Association of Boards of Education and the National School Boards Association.

The purpose of the forum is to explore with community leaders how the effectiveness and quality of public schools should be measured.

One important measure is how well students perform on standardized tests. A key question to be explored is what else should count in assessing public schools.

In addition to similar forums in four states (Maryland, Connecticut, Colorado, and Minnesota), the National School Boards Association will conduct a national poll and produce a summary report of the information gained from the forums and the poll.

The school is at 1229 Washington Road, Westminster. Information: 410-751-3126.

School board candidates invited to speak at school

The Health, Human and Social Sciences Academy at Century High School will sponsor a forum for candidates for the county school board from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday in the school auditorium.

Five of the candidates are expected to participate. Questions will come from students and parents. The community is invited to attend the debate, the first in a series of Evenings of Speakers being planned by the academy.

The school is at 355 Ronsdale Road near Winfield. Information: 410-386-4400.

County schools offer GED tests, practice

Carroll County Public Schools offers GED tests and practice sessions for the exam for those 16 and older who wish to earn their high school diploma.

The two-day GED test consists of five sections: math, science, social studies, literature and the arts, and writing skills. To earn their diploma, students must achieve a passing score. To sit for the test, individuals must be 16 or older, have been a state resident for at least 90 days, have been withdrawn from school for at least 90 days and pay a fee for the test.

The next practice tests will be given from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and Nov. 15 at Carroll Adult Learning Connection, 224 N. Center St., Westminster.

The next test date is from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Nov. 14 and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 16 at Westminster High School, 1225 Washington Road. Tests are given monthly.

Information: 410-751-3680.
