Today's game

October 26, 2002|By Christian Ewell

Maryland (5-2, 1-1 ACC) at Duke (2-6, 0-4)

Site: Wallace Wade Stadium, Durham, N.C.

Time: 1 p.m.

Radio: WBAL (1090 AM)

Line: Maryland by 13

Series: Maryland leads 27-18

Last meeting: Maryland beat Duke, 59-17, last year in College Park.

Last game: Maryland beat Georgia Tech, 34-10; Duke lost to North Carolina State, 24-22.

Maryland offense vs. Duke defense: With Chris Downs and Josh Allen both playing well in the backfield, the addition of Bruce Perry may not be that vital, though it will be interesting to see what the run game can do against an improved Blue Devils run defense. Duke, however, hasn't improved much against teams in the air, and Terps quarterback Scott McBrien has gained confidence over the past month.

Duke offense vs. Maryland defense: Only twice have defenses shut down Duke's run game, which is why it's likely that Maryland will let sophomore quarterback Adam Smith try to beat them, even though he threw for 353 yards last week. Maryland's defense ranks 12th nationally in points allowed per game (15.9).

Special teams: Maryland seems to have the major advantage here. Steve Suter (26.8 yards a game on kickoffs) will return kicks against a team that allows a 24-yard average on kickoffs. The Terps rank first with a net punting average of 38.1 yards. Duke kicker Brent Garber has made only 61.9 percent of his 21 field-goal attempts.
