McDaniel College to show educators' works tomorrow

The McDaniel College department of art and art history is presenting Disparate Voices, a mixed-media exhibit, through Dec. 6 in Esther Prangley Rice Gallery in Peterson Hall. An opening reception will be held from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. tomorrow with most of the artists.

The exhibit showcases a variety of works, including prints, paintings, weavings, photographs and sculpture. Local artist Jim Roberts, an art instructor at Westminster High School, will exhibit a wall sculpture.

Street of Rhode Island; and Anne Walker of Monkton.

The artists are educators from colleges, universities, and public and private elementary and high schools who attended the Maryland Institute College of Art Summer Masters of Fine Arts program.

Arts council sponsoring design contest for new logo

Carroll County Arts Council is sponsoring a design competition to choose a new graphic logo for the organization in conjunction with its planned move to the new Carroll Arts Center on West Main Street.

The winning design will be used on printed publications, stationery, the Web site, building signs and souvenir gift items, such as T-shirts and tote bags.

A contest was held this fall, but a winner was not selected. Those designers who submitted entries in the initial contest are eligible to reapply.

The winning artists will receive a cash award of $500.

Entries are due Nov. 6.

Serious Jokers to hold release event for new CD

Serious Jokers, a Carroll County-based band, will hold a CD-release event tomorrow evening at Genova Restaurant in Hampstead.

The new CD, Fetish, follows the group's first album, Temptations, released in 2000. The group has been together for six years.

Band members are: Don Ebaugh, rhythm guitarist; Chris Myers, drummer; Steve Reed, guitars; Eric Eckard, bassist.

Stash from 98 Rock radio will be host for the event. The band Robbing Noll also will perform.

Admission is $5 for ages 21 and older.

County Arc to present the Capitol Steps on Nov. 9

The Arc of Carroll County will present an evening of music and comedy with the Capitol Steps at 7:30 Nov. 9 at Westminster High School.

The Capitol Steps is a troupe of congressional staffers turned comedians who travel the country satirizing the people and places that once employed them.

The group has recorded 21 albums, including its latest, One Bush, Two Bush, Old Bush, New Bush. It has been featured on radio and television programs.

Tickets are $15 and $10 for students; group rates of $13 for 10 to 25 tickets are available. The event is a fund-raiser for The Arc, which provides assistance to those with developmental disabilities.

Farm museum to offer arts classes starting Nov. 4

Carroll County Farm Museum will offer its traditional arts classes this fall.

Available classes are:

Beginner Shaker Boxes: from noon to 4:30 p.m. Nov. 4 and 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Nov. 5. The cost is $115.

Yam Carving: from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 5. The cost is $25.

Christmas Ornaments: from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 5. The cost is $30.

American Folk Art: from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Nov. 5 and 12 (two-session class). The cost is $60.

Advanced Shaker Boxes: from noon to 4:30 p.m. Nov. 6 and 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Nov. 7. The cost is $115.

Wreath Making: from 9 a.m. to noon Nov. 12. The cost is $25.

Woodcarving: from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 12. The cost is $70.

Indian Gathering Basketmaking: from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 13. The cost is $55. For experienced basket makers only.

Paper Making: from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 13. The cost is $35.

Registration is complete when payment has been received. A 24-hour cancellation notification is required for a refund. A minimum number of students is required for classes.

`Nine Months in York Town' to be presented Nov 8-10

Eichelberger Performing Arts Center in Hanover, Pa., will present Nine Months in York Town -- the Founding of A Nation from Nov. 8-10, part of the official celebration of the 225th anniversary of the adoption of the Articles of Confederation in York, Pa.

The production is based on the book Nine Months in York Town by James McClure. The play brings events to life as the Continental Congress flees Philadelphia and finds safety from the British in a settlement named York Town, now York, Pa.

The living history theater will be held at 8 p.m. Nov. 8 and 9, and 3 p.m. Nov. 10. Tickets are $15 and $10.
