Gary Cornette Nelson, a retired General Motors autoworker, died of cancer Thursday at Franklin Square Hospital Center. The Edgewood resident was 61.
Mr. Nelson was born in Harrisonburg, Va., and raised in the Victory Villa section of Baltimore County. He was a graduate of Kenwood High School.
He served in the Navy from 1959 to 1963, and was assigned to the USS Jonas Ingram, a destroyer in the North Atlantic.
Mr. Nelson began working in 1964 at General Motors' Broening Highway plant in the paint department. He retired in 1997.
He also worked part time delivering auto parts for the Pep Boys auto parts store in Bel Air, and was an avid hunter and fisherman.
He was a communicant of Prince of Peace Roman Catholic Church in Edgewood, where a funeral Mass was offered Monday.
Mr. Nelson is survived by his wife of 38 years, the former Mary M. Kamberger; three sons, William C. Nelson of Joppa, Robert C. Nelson of Edgewood and Mark A. Nelson of Bel Air; and a granddaughter.
