A variety of dishes, and one kids loved

Takeout

But the service was slow at China Moon

China Moon is an unremarkable-looking storefront restaurant in a Lutherville shopping plaza.

I suspect it's the kind of place where, if you visit enough, you'd find a couple of dishes that stand out and stick with them.

China Moon sits in something of an annex to the Ridgely Plaza, just west of York Road. There are a few chairs in the small orange and yellow waiting area and an odd assortment of magazines, including a November 1996 issue of the US Air magazine.

Only two people were working during a relatively busy lunch time, and our order took a good 25 minutes to prepare, a bit slow in my book.

We tried a wide variety of dishes, with mixed success. The egg-drop soup ($2.25 for a large serving) had plenty of egg but little taste, and the steamed dumplings ($4.50 for seven) were too doughy. The egg rolls ($2.50 for two), though, were fat and tasty, with tiny shrimps nestled in the shredded cabbage.

For the main course, we tried three dishes. Sichuan vegetables ($5.50) was the best, a nice mix of veggies, including mushrooms and water chestnuts, in a peppery sauce. The chicken fried rice ($6.95 for a quart) was a basic mix of salty rice, chicken and onions; the kids loved it. Hunan shrimp ($9.95) had precious few shrimp and tasted the same as the Sichuan vegetables, except with less spice.

The only desserts at China Moon are almond cookies (50 cents for four) and fortune cookies (25 cents apiece).
