Edward Walter Bowen Jr., 79, telephone manager

Edward Walter Bowen Jr., a retired telephone manager, died Wednesday of a cerebral hemorrhage at St. Agnes HealthCare. He was 79 and lived in Catonsville.

In his 35 years with Chesapeake & Potomac Telephone Co. of Maryland, he was a manager based in Hunt Valley. He retired 17 years ago.

Born in Baltimore and raised in Northwest Baltimore, he was a 1941 graduate of Forest Park High School.

During World War II, he was a Navy airman and radio operator who flew on English Channel patrols in search of enemy submarines. In later years, he attended reunions of fellow crew members.

Services were held Friday.

Mr. Bowen is survived by his wife of 38 years, the former Carole Marlene Altvater; a stepson, Steven William Johnson of Huntingtown; two stepdaughters, Susan Carole Ostovitz of Catonsville and Sherry Jeanne Burgee of Catonsville; a brother, George Leroy Bowen III of Calabash Shores, N.C.; a sister, Laura Gertrude Parr of Frederick; and six grandchildren.
