Joan S. Roth, 66, active in Hadassah, homemaker

Joan S. Roth, a homemaker and former Pikesville resident, died of heart failure Saturday in Scottsdale, Ariz., where she had moved in 1986. She was 66.

Born Joan Smelkinson in Baltimore, she was raised on Calloway Avenue and graduated in 1954 from Forest Park High School.

Mrs. Roth earned a bachelor's degree in education in 1958 from the University of Maryland and taught in Baltimore public schools for several years.

While living in Pikesville, she was a longtime member and president of Hadassah. She was a former member of Woodholme Country Club.

After moving to Scottsdale, she served on the boards of the Jewish Federation, Jewish Family and Children's Services and Jewish National Fund.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow at Beth El Congregation, 8101 Park Heights Ave.

Mrs. Roth is survived by her three sons, Joseph H. Roth, Robert N. Roth and Jonathan E. Roth, all of Scottsdale; a brother, Robert Smelkinson of Baltimore; and nine grandchildren.
