Red Cross offers courses in CPR, first aid training

Courses in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first aid have been scheduled at several sites in Anne Arundel County by American Red Cross of Central Maryland. They include:

"Adult CPR," teaching emergency action principles, rescue breathing, anti-choking procedures and rescue for victims age 8 and older. It is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Edgewater Red Cross, 3475 Pike Ridge Road; from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Oct. 8 at Edgewater Red Cross; and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 26 at Edgewater. The cost is $35.

"Community CPR," teaching emergency action principles, rescue breathing, anti-choking procedures and rescue for victims of all ages. It will be offered from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 26 at Edgewater Red Cross. The cost is $40.

"Standard First Aid," teaching rescue breathing, clearing an obstructed airway and one-rescuer CPR on victims age 8 years and older. Also includes treatment for severe bleeding, burns, musculoskeletal injuries, shock and sudden illness. Classes will be offered from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Edgewater Red Cross; and 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Oct. 8 and 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Oct. 10 (two-session course) at Edgewater. Call for other times. The cost is $40.

"Infant and Child CPR," teaching emergency action principles, rescue breathing, anti-choking procedures and CPR for victims to age 8. Classes are scheduled for Oct. 12, Oct. 19 and Oct. 26. Call for times and locations. The cost is $35.

"Infant and Child CPR and First Aid," including infant and child CPR certification, emphasizing first aid for those who work in child care settings. Classes will be held Oct. 12, Oct. 19 and Oct. 26. Call for times and locations. The cost is $40.

"Crime Avoidance Training," interactive training that focuses on empowering individuals to take responsibility for their safety. The class, organized around a typical day, covers security awareness, tough-target strategies, safety on the move, using an ATM and responding to threatening situations. Instructors will come to a facility, group or organization at a time that is convenient for the group. A minimum of 10 people is required. The fee is $9.95 per person. Health Department offers flu immunizations

The county Health Department has scheduled flu-immunization clinics for adult residents of Anne Arundel County:

Oct. 16, 9 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., Pascal Senior Center, 125 Dorsey Road, Glen Burnie.

Oct. 22, 9 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., Arnold Senior Center, 49 Church Road, Arnold.

Oct. 24, 9 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., O'Malley Senior Center, 1275 Odenton Road, Odenton.

Oct. 29, 9 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., South County Senior Center, 27 Stepneys Lane, Edgewater.

Nov. 6, 9 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., Brooklyn Park Senior Center, 292 Hammonds Lane, Brooklyn Park.

Nov. 8, 9 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., Health Services Building, 3 Truman Parkway, Annapolis.

Nov. 20, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Anne Arundel Community College, 101 College Parkway, Arnold.

Nov. 21, 9 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. First Presbyterian Church, Duke of Gloucester and Conduit streets, Annapolis.

Nov. 25, 9 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 6 p.m., Health Services Building, 3 Truman Parkway, Annapolis.

Dec. 6, 9 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., Health Services Building, 3 Truman Parkway, Annapolis.

Inoculations are free but $10 donations are encouraged. Pneumococcal vaccine will also be available at all clinic locations. This vaccine is recommended for people age 65 and older, people with chronic heart or pulmonary conditions and for people who have had their spleen removed or who have sickle cell anemia. Parenthood classes set at North Arundel Hospital

North Arundel Hospital will offer free classes this month for parents, parents-to-be and couples contemplating parenthood.

"Maybe Baby Preconception Counseling" will be offered from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. tomorrow. This class helps couples with decisions they face as they plan a pregnancy.

"Motherhood Experience" will be offered from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 7 and 21. These classes include a tour of the Special Beginnings birthing facility and information on planning for childbirth.

"Baby Care Basics" will be offered from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Oct. 8 and will cover questions such as dealing with a crying baby and telling when a child is hungry or sick.
