Peter Jensen wins food writers' prize

October 01, 2002

Sun staff writer Peter Jensen won first place in a national writing competition sponsored by the Association of Food Journalists, an organization representing food editors, columnists and reporters in the United States and Canada.

Jensen's five-part series "The Global Grill" was deemed best series, special section or special project for newspapers with circulations between 200,000 and 400,000.

The award was announced Saturday at the organization's annual conference in Vancouver, British Columbia.

The "Global Grill" series, which appeared in the Sun's food section in the summer of 2001, examined how ethnic cooking has "penetrated that distinctly American institution, the backyard barbecue, land of propane- and charcoal-fed flame, smoke and tong-wielding men dressed in silly aprons."

The judges described Jensen's stories -- which covered culinary influences from Mexico to Asia -- as "amusing, informative and thoughtful."
