Howard High School prepares for 50th-anniversary celebration

Howard High School will celebrate its 50th anniversary with homecoming festivities, a proclamation and a Golden Jubilee Program this month and next.

A homecoming parade is planned for 10 a.m. Saturday. A tailgate party with alumni will be at 11 a.m. A Hall of Fame Induction of alumni will be at noon, and the game - the Howard High Lions vs. the Mount Hebron Vikings - will begin at 2 p.m.

The proclamation, "50 Years of Excellence: 1952-2002," will be issued in the school auditorium at 9 a.m. Nov. 7; and a Golden Anniversary Jubilee is planned from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Nov. 10.

Book club to meet Thursday at library

The Elkridge branch library, 6540 Washington Blvd., will hold a meeting of its Mother-Daughter Book Club, for girls ages 11 to 13 and their parents, from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday.

Participants will discuss What My Mother Doesn't Know by Sonya Sones. Registration is required. 410-313-5085.

Square dancing lessons to be offered Thursday

Tom Thumb Square Dance Club of Howard County is offering square dance lessons for beginners from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Thursdays at Hollifield Station Elementary School in Elllicott City.

Entertainment books available from Kiwanis

The Kiwanis Club of Ellicott City is selling Entertainment 2003 books, featuring discounts on restaurants, travel and recreational activities.

The proceeds will be used for student scholarships, charitable programs and children's events and celebrations.

Deployed: Seaman Laura M. McCallister, daughter of Amy Broderick of Ellicott City, has been deployed for six months to the Mediterranean Sea and Persian Gulf on the aircraft carrier USS George Washington, based in Norfolk, Va. She is a 1997 graduate of Mount Hebron High School.

Fast food: The SPRING Tasties resource and support group will meet from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Tuesdays, beginning Oct. 8, at Ellicott City Senior Center, 9401 Frederick Road. The group will meet for six weeks and focus on how to prepare balanced, affordable and easy meals. 410-313- 1400.

Fall Festival: Waverly Elementary School PTA will present its 13th annual Fall Festival from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 12, rain or shine, at the school. Food and carnival games will be featured. Crafts, a bake sale and a haunted house are planned. The Oriole Bird will attend. Admission is free. Tickets for games will be sold.
