Today's game

September 28, 2002|By Kevin Van Valkenburg

Duke (1-3, 0-1 ACC) at Navy (1-2)

Site: Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium

Time: Noon

Radio: WJFK (1300 AM), WNAV (1430 AM)

Line: Navy by 2

Series: Navy leads 16-11-5

Last meeting: Duke won, 27-16, on Sept. 27, 1997 in Durham

Last game: Northwestern beat Navy, 49-40; Florida St. beat Duke, 48-17

Navy offense vs. Duke defense: Navy has proven it can move the ball (678 yards of offense against Northwestern), but the Mids need to prove they can hold onto the ball, too. Five turnovers last week were the difference in a 49-40 loss to the Wildcats. The Blue Devils' defense is ranked 47th in the country against the run, and has forced 1.25 turnovers a game.

Navy defense vs. Duke offense: Three times in four games, Duke fullback Alex Wade has rushed for more than 100 yards, including 114 against Florida State. That's big trouble for Navy, which hasn't stopped anyone on the ground. Marcus Sanders replaces Shalimar Brazier at left cornerback.

Special teams: Navy looked much better on special teams last week, but there is still room to improve. Geoff Blumenfeld again gets the nod at kicker after a solid performance last week. Tony Lane is averaging 26.8 yards a kickoff return for Navy, and had a 55-yard return against Northwestern.
