September 26, 2002

Elizabeth P. Reed, a retired Johns Hopkins surgical technician and records supervisor, died of heart failure Saturday at Northwest Hospital Center. The East Baltimore resident was 84.

About 60 years ago, she worked with Johns Hopkins surgeon Dr. Alfred Blalock and pediatric cardiologist Dr. Helen B. Taussig during their famed "blue baby" operations. She was later a Hopkins medical records supervisor.

In the 1960s, she was a long-term substitute teacher for the city system at the Paquin School and the old Robert E. Lee Elementary.

Born Elizabeth Portia Milbourne in Baltimore, she was raised on North Bond Street and graduated from Douglass High School in 1936.

That year, she married William Tolson Reed, a mechanic and stationary engineer. He died in 1990.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 11 a.m. today at St. Wenceslaus Roman Catholic Church, Collington and Ashland avenues, where she was an active member.

She is survived by two sons, William T. Reed Jr. of Randallstown and Wayne Reed of Woodlawn; four daughters, Yvonne Hynson of Westminster, Ernestine Scott of Woodlawn, Joyce Burrell of Owings Mills and Patricia Reed of Baltimore; a sister, Loretta Milbourne of Baltimore; 13 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
