A 2-month-old girl taken to Johns Hopkins Hospital on Saturday with a severely fractured skull and internal injuries - apparently from a beating in her family's Brooklyn Park home - died late yesterday afternoon, Anne Arundel County police said.

The infant's father, described by authorities as an illegal immigrant from Guatemala, was arrested yesterday evening on multiple assault charges, police said.

A murder charge has not been filed in the case because authorities are awaiting an autopsy today by the state medical examiner's office and consultation with the county state's attorney's office, said Sgt. William Krampf, a county police spokesman.

The infant, Jennifer Nicole Vail, was found unconscious Saturday afternoon at the home in the 200 block of Fourth Ave., by police and paramedics responding to a report of an injured child, Krampf said.

Based on interviews with the family, Krampf said, police believe that the father struck the girl on the head and violently shook her Friday and Saturday.

The father, Rocael Vail, 24, was charged with two counts of child abuse, two counts of first-degree assault, two counts of second-degree assault and one count of child neglect.
