Cardinal John Baptist Wu, 77, head of Hong Kong's Catholic Diocese, who led the church through the sensitive transition from British to Chinese rule, died yesterday of bone marrow cancer.

Born in mainland China, he was ordained in 1952 and named a bishop in 1975. He was appointed in 1988 as the first cardinal in Hong Kong, where the Roman Catholic Church has 347,000 followers.
