State honors county for its innovative growth management

Anne Arundel County's Greenway Master Plan - the goal of which is to create an interconnected network of open space - has won a state award for innovative growth management.

County Executive Janet S. Owens accepted the 2002 Government Innovation Smart Growth Award from the state Economic Growth, Resource Protection and Planning Commission at an awards ceremony in Annapolis on Thursday.

The Greenway Master Plan was created to protect ecologically valuable lands and to help animals such as deer and fox migrate among habitats.

2 men arrested in Hanover in drug trafficking case

About 112 grams of suspected cocaine was seized and two men were arrested Thursday after a two-month drug trafficking investigation by Anne Arundel County police.

Sean Warren Tilley, 21, of Pikesville and Torrey Ryan Parker, 23, of Baltimore were arrested as they arrived at a parking lot in Hanover, police said. Police also seized Tilley's 1999 Ford truck.

Detectives had purchased about 87 grams of suspected cocaine from the men during the investigation, police said. After the arrests, another 80 grams of cocaine and a loaded .45-caliber pistol were recovered from Tilley's apartment in the 4600 block of Horizon Circle, police said. The total value of the cocaine seized and purchased in the case is about $28,000.

Parker has been charged with felony narcotics violations in Anne Arundel, and investigators are seeking a federal indictment charging Tilley with narcotics and weapons violations, police said.

Teen charged with theft of cars, drug possession

A 15-year-old Crofton resident was arrested Friday after he admitted to stealing eight vehicles - mostly Dodge Neons - during the past two months, county police said.

The teen-ager has been charged as a juvenile with five counts of motor-vehicle theft, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, destruction of property, driving without a license and drug possession, police said. His name is not being released because of his age.

The teen-ager led officers on a brief foot chase near the Soda Pop Shop on Johns Hopkins Road before being arrested, police said.

Woman attacked walking to work near Reece Road

A woman walking to work at 5:40 a.m. Saturday said she was pulled into the woods at Reece Road and New Disney Road and physically and sexually assaulted, county police said.

The attacker was described as a black male, 5 feet 11 inches tall, 175 to 190 pounds, with a dark complexion and short hair.

Sobriety checkpoint yields 8 DUI, drug arrests

A sobriety checkpoint Friday night on Route 2 between 11th Avenue and Townsend Avenue in Glen Burnie yielded seven driving-under-the-influence arrests and one arrest for drug possession, police said.
