A 71-year-old retired math teacher was charged yesterday with sexually abusing an eighth-grade pupil more than three decades ago while teaching at the now-closed Belt Junior High School in Wheaton, Montgomery County police reported.

Deno John Diamandis of the 19000 block of Rena Court in Brookeville surrendered to investigators yesterday morning in Rockville. He is charged with unnatural and perverted sexual practice, a misdemeanor that carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $1,000 fine.

He was released on personal bond pending a court date.

Last month, a 49-year-old woman contacted police and told investigators that Diamandis, who had agreed to tutor her after school, touched her inappropriately on three occasions in 1967 -- in his classroom and at his Wheaton apartment, where he drove her.

In exchange for baby-sitting his children, Diamandis continued to tutor the girl in 10th grade, during which time he is accused of having "sexual relations" with her, police said.

Diamandis was hired in 1962 at Belt Junior High, according to a spokeswoman for the Montgomery County school system. He later moved to Gaithersburg High School and retired in 1995 after 33 years as a public school teacher.

Reached at his home last night, Diamandis declined to comment on the charges.
