MLB: Reduced suspensions of following individuals for roles in incident July 28: Orioles P Willis Roberts from seven to five games, Orioles OF Melvin Mora from four to three games; Red Sox C Jason Varitek from four to three games, Red Sox IF Rey Sanchez from three to two games; and Red Sox pitching coach Tony Cloninger from two games to one game. Suspended Expos P Tomo Ohka six games and fined him $1,000 and suspended Braves P Chris Hammond three games for throwing at batters during game last Saturday; players' association appealed Ohka's suspension.

DEVIL RAYS: Recalled P Dewon Brazelton, P Jesus Colome and P Delvin James from Triple-A Durham.

DIAMONDBACKS: 1B Mark Grace agreed to forgo $3 million option for next season and will return to team for less money.

INDIANS: Recalled OF-1B Ben Broussard, P Ryan Drese, IF Earl Snyder from Triple-A Buffalo. Purchased contracts of P Cliff Lee, P Dave Maurer, IF Brandon Phillips, P Brian Tallet from Buffalo. ROCKIES: Announced that P Mark Corey cleared waivers and was assigned to Triple-A Colorado Springs.

WIZARDS: Signed G-F Rod Grizzard, 39th overall selection in NBA draft, to two-year contract.

FERRIS STATE: Canceled today's football game against Grand Valley State because of death of freshman LB Matt Sklom, who collapsed during practice Wednesday.

JOHNS HOPKINS: Women's crew members Sharon Betz, Nancy Tulathimutte, and J. Dawn Waters were named to US Rowing collegiate honor roll first team.

BRONCOS: S Kenoy Kennedy plans to appeal $7,500 fine from NFL for hit on Rams WR Isaac Bruce last week.

CHIEFS: Agreed to $31 million, seven-year contract with TE Tony Gonzalez that includes $10 million signing bonus.

COWBOYS: Released CB Bryant Westbrook. Signed LB Louis Mackey from practice squad.

Hockey

CAPITALS: Signed D Jason Doig, who had been with Senators, to one-year contract and RW Owen Fussey to three-year contract.

FLAMES: Announced retirement of G Mike Vernon.

KINGS: Announced that D Aaron Miller had abdominal surgery and is expected to be sidelined at least six weeks.

PANTHERS: Signed 10-year contract with Office Depot for naming rights to home arena, which will be called Office Depot Center.

RED WINGS: Re-signed F Darren McCarty to one-year contract.
