Public forums open school board's meetings tomorrow

The Board of Education of Howard County will hold a regularly scheduled meeting at 4 p.m. tomorrow in the Board Room at the Department of Education, 10910 Route 108, Ellicott City.

The afternoon session and an evening session at 7:30 p.m. will each begin with a public forum, when residents can address the board on any topic. Speakers are asked to sign up in advance.

Students must submit immunization certificates

Students attending Maryland schools must show compliance with immunization requirements by giving the school principal a completed Maryland immunization certificate.

Columbia Association offers school enrichment

The Columbia Association's School Age Services will launch an Enrichment Program today as part of its before- and after-school program.

Parents can enroll their children in activities such as martial arts, tennis, swimming, golf, ballet and ice skating during after-school hours. There is an additional fee for enrichment activities that include transportation.

Parents can refuse release of information

The Howard County public school system has occasion to disclose information about students for public information purposes. The information, classified as "directory information," includes a student's name, address, telephone number, date and place of birth, major field of study and other facts.

In accordance with Maryland law, the school system will not disclose students' addresses or phone numbers without permission from a parent or guardian, except to the PTA Council of Howard County or a local school unit, and other approved organizations; a branch of the U.S. armed forces; and any Maryland community college. Photographs of students in school activities may also be published.

Students age 18 or older and parents of other students have the right to refuse the release of any such information and photos. Requests should be sent in writing by Sept. 30 to Public Information Office, Howard County Public School System, 10910 Route 108, Ellicott City 21042.
