Yankees update

Bernie Williams is competing for the American League batting title, Alfonso Soriano is a candidate for Most Valuable Player and the New York Yankees are preparing their usual October itinerary. Their magic number is 14 for clinching the AL East for the fifth straight year. They lead the AL in runs (810), with three players topping 100 and a fourth, Williams, only four away. The Yankees haven't had four players with 100 runs since 1941. Wells, 3-1 against the Orioles this season, will be pitching with two fewer teeth after an altercation at a Manhattan diner early Saturday. The Orioles are 6-6 against the Yankees this season. They took two of three at Yankee Stadium in June, their first series win there since 1997. Even with Mariano Rivera on the DL, New York's bullpen has 14 saves and a 1.76 ERA since Aug. 1. The Yankees are 75-1 when leading after eight innings.
